St Olaf’s Castle in Savonlinna, Finland, was founded by Erik Alexsson
Tott in 1475. The castle withstood several attacks by Russians during
the First and Second Russian-Swedish wars between 1741 and 1790 .
Finland was under Swedish rule from the 13th Century to the 18th
century, and thus it was the first Swedish castle that could withstand
cannon fire. St Olaf’s castle was purposely built in an area of lakes and
waterways to deter a Russian offensive. Currently the three tower castle
is in excellent condition, housing exhibitions and a Castle Museum. The
internationally acclaimed Savonlinna Opera Festival has been held
there since 1912.  Text /Photo: Eero Sorila

With passion,  Eero Sorila has photographed castles around the world.
His photo book CASTLES OLD AND NEW will be available in Jan. / Feb.

   NEW, FREE SERVICE TO SWAP
     USED BOOKS IN FINNISH

In Oct. 2011, Finnishedbooks.com was
launched. It is a free service for buying
and selling Finnish books, movies and
music. The website is geared towards
all Finnish-speakers in the United
States. The website was developed by
Antti Koskenrouta, a Washington, DC
based web developer.

When adding a new book for sale, the
user enters the book’s ISBN number
on the page. Based on the ISBN, the
system attempts to retrieve the basic
information on the book (title, author)
and a picture of the cover. The user
can also add the back cover text as
well as their own description on the
book.

Each seller sets the prices for their
products, but the idea is that they
would be nominal.
The transactions
take place between the buyer and
seller. That’s why there are no
commissions on the sales.
Kippis!, the literary journal of the Finnish North American Literature Association,
is
open for submissions for its first online edition.

Writers in any genre are encouraged to submit poetry (3-5 poems), short fiction
(1500-5000 words), essays, memoirs, and stand-alone novel excerpts.

You do not need to be a member of the association to submit material.  Work can
be submitted online to gkwuori at hotmail dot com, or through the postal service
to:  G. K. Wuori, 440 S. California St., Sycamore, Illinois 60178.
