Lorraine Esala
Finnish North American Literature Association
Biographical information

Lorraine Esala was raised by adoptive parents in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay), Ontario,
Canada, by her Swedish immigrant adoptive parents. When her family was displaced from
Finnish Karelia during the Russian invasion of 1939, Asala was sent by her Finnish parents
to live with family friends in Sweden. When both her parents died and her siblings were
disbursed into the Finnish countryside, Lorraine was left with the Swedish family and
emigrated with them. When she grew up, her adoptive parents shared her past with her.
Her publication, listed below, tells the story of her reconnection with her Finnish family.
